Buckle snapped halfway through my backpacking trip

This was the backpack I opted to get as someone who doesn't backpack much. I felt that the bag itself was priced well and on first wear and very easy to adjust. The folks at REI helped with sizing it as well. The pockets are super convenient with easy access pockets throughout the pack, and two pockets up top to grab the snacks. The bag expands very easily, and didn't feel the need to force everything. I carried 40lb with it without it feeling too lopsided. It got me through my first backpacking trip, 19 miles and 40lb. Unfortunately, in my first backpacking trip with it, the buckle on the waist strap snapped, so I had to use a carabiner for the remaining half of the trip to secure the waist straps on the bag. It was not ideal. I also had trouble with the waist band, where my sides chafed, and even blistered on one hip. To be fair, this may be due to the loose pants I had.

Best pack if durability is your top priority

I've put a Kestrel 38 through the ringer already, primarily used for maintaining a wilderness trail in the WMNF where the pack is constantly on and off and carrying sharp tools. I loved it so much that I got the 58 for bigger trips. Best part of the bag is the durable fabric, which is absolutely bombproof. If you do trailwork, bushwacking, or are just rough on your pack then this is the best option I have found. Straps, tie down points, and pockets are all well designed. The pack is super comfortable to carry, even with heavy loads.

Nearly Perfect Pack (for me).

I have the pre-2023 version of this pack and I can't help but notice that this new version is about a pound heavier. Still, it's hard to imagine a better backpack. I am not an ultralight backpacker by any stretch (maybe 30-35 pounds total load for 3-5 days) and after hiking for a while I almost forgot I was wearing a pack. I liked the way the Kestrel fit me better than the Atmos but that's certainly a personal fit/preference thing. I do like how the Kestrel keeps the weight closer to your back. While I only have a few trips under my belt with this pack, it does seem to be made with first-rate materials and fittings (the zipper for the "suitcase" front flap opening is very hefty for example) and I imagine it will wear well.
